The Theatre of Marcellus was built between 17 and 13 BC and was opened by Emperor Augustus around 12 BC. It was used until the early 4th century and could hold up to 20,000 people. In the Middle Ages, the theatre was used as a fortress. The theatre is located in an open-air archaeological park near the remains of the Temple of Apollo with its magnificent Corinthian columns. I highly recommend it to those who enjoy Roman architecture. Admission is free.

Spotted this stunning structure on the way walking to Trastevere. I believe it was dated older than the colosseum! Cannot go inside but one could admire from the outside! Not sure why this structure does not get more attentions, especially for its history! Don’t miss it when you are in Rome!

After strolling through the Jewish Ghetto, I arrived at the Theatre of Marcellus (Teatro di Marcello), a breathtaking testament to Ancient Rome’s ingenuity. Built by Julius Caesar and completed by Augustus in 13 BCE, it was dedicated to Augustus’s nephew, Marcellus, and could hold up to 20,000 spectators. Its stacked arches and travertine façade inspired later structures like the Colosseum.

Walking through its vaulted corridors, I felt the echoes of ancient spectators who once gathered here for plays and performances. The theatre’s evolution is equally fascinating—repurposed as a fortress in the Middle Ages and later integrated into the Orsini family’s Renaissance palazzo. This blend of eras, visible in its upper levels, exemplifies Rome’s layered history.

Standing beneath its arches, I marveled at how the Theatre of Marcellus endures as a bridge between antiquity and modernity—a living monument to Rome’s timelessness.

Beautiful theatre, which is now owned by a private family so there are no tickets or tours inside.

The building is visible only from the outside (for free) but there are gates to the area so while you can admire it from afar, it's better to get closer.

The Flavio Colusseum may get all the attention, but out of two, this theatro is for thru ancient Rome tourists. Walk around this theater, and you will see what I mean. Take the time to imagine yourself in ancient life
