Our First Experience at Acquolina

About a year ago, while at the dog park, another dog owner mentioned that her partner co-owns Acquolina in North Beach, San Francisco. Despite being a longtime North Beach resident and often passing by, I confessed that I had never eaten there. She shared some history about the restaurant and its food, encouraging me to give it a try. It took a while, but we finally had lunch/brunch today.

We began with an Americano to wake us up. Then, we decided to share a Heirloom Caprese and a Bufalina pizza. Before describing the food, I want to highlight that the staff at Acquolina is wonderful. Everyone was friendly and smiling, from the young man who seated us to the young lady who took our order to the servers who brought our food and cleared our table.

The restaurant is beautifully located on the corner of Stockton and Union Streets, with windows facing Washington Square Park and Union Street. At the far end, there is a bar, with a mix of regular and high tables inside. We chose to sit outside to enjoy the nice weather, but the interior decor was beautiful and inviting.

For our light lunch/brunch, we opted to share. The Heirloom Caprese included freshly sliced heirloom tomatoes and large chunks of delicious mozzarella cheese, perfectly complemented by the olive oil.

Our request to add Italian ham enhanced the Bufalina pizza, which typically comes with Italian mozzarella, tomato sauce, and fresh basil. The pizza was cut into six flavorful slices with a perfect crust.

We considered having dessert but ultimately decided against it. However, we will definitely return to try their other dishes!

Clearly in competition with Tony’s Pizza across the street, and it did not disappoint! Pizza was wonderful, and clearly cooked fresh. Chips were also absolutely sublime. Would highly recommend to anyone seeking great pizza in San Francisco.

Homemade spaghetti is delicious The service is good and the delivery... The presentation is fantastic. The food came out quickly and steaming hot.

Disappointing Experience: Rude Service and Undercooked Pasta

We usually go to Tony's Pizza in San Francisco, but this time someone recommended we try Acquolina. My friend and his girlfriend were visiting from Los Angeles, and we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to take them and give Acquolina a shot. We drove from Lodi, CA, more than 90 miles away, taking an hour and a half to reach the restaurant.

We ordered couple of appetizers, a couple of pizzas, and my daughter ordered a pasta for herself. First of all, all the food came at once - appetizers and main course. We were initially just having appetizers with drinks and then moved on to the main course. When my 10-year-old daughter tried her pasta, after a couple of bites, she said something didn't seem right. The pasta was way undercooked. She complained to us, and at that point, we put the pasta on our plates to try. She was right; it was undercooked.

We called our server to inform him that the pasta was undercooked. Without missing a beat, he said, "Now you guys are done with most of it," with no apology, nothing. He made us feel horrible and speechless, as if we were complaining to get free pasta. For reference, see the pictures of the pasta and decide if we were done with the portions.

We were so shocked and stressed by the server's rude and dismissive attitude that we just wrapped up the dinner, took our pizzas to go, paid our bill, and left. That server's actions made us feel belittled and disrespected. We and our visiting friends were in shock and did not have a good experience at all. Even the pizzas weren't that good. I am sorry, but we won't be returning to Acquolina.

Great experience in little Italy!! Parm wheel is the reason we chose Acquolina and it didn’t disappoint.

Food was good, only issue one might have would be that it didn’t come out together & by the time it all came out some plates were cold. So that’s definitely an opportunity.

Service was good, atmosphere good, limited cocktail menu, good wine, overall great experience.
