For table service, spaces fill up very quickly over the weekends. You can order bakery items at counter while you wait. Despite the chaos, staff were well organized and always friendly/patient.

Scallion biscuit (sweet and salty) and pineapple bun (though a tad too much filling) were the highlights. Main dish-wise, minced pork and chicken rice bowls were decent but would not go out of the way for. Typical for what you'd find at Taiwanese places in LA. HK french toast interesting but tad too much cream filling for my taste.

Overall, would come back for the baked goods and ambiance (when not super crowded).

The most amazing pastries ever!
I hate pastries but this place changed my mind! My boyfriend and I finished all of them in one sitting.

The food was so comforting and delicious! I would definitely recommend trying everything!

The only downside is the inside is tight. There’s often a long line, we waited about 20 minutes. Also parking can be tricky! There isn’t any parking lot for the restaurant.

Such a cool place that deserves the hype. The food was all delicious and surprisingly affordable for a trendy LA spot. The dishes and drinks were spot-on for flavor, not easily found elsewhere. It was super packed on a Saturday, but the wait wasn’t insanely long. The place is cramped, but their use the space well. The French toast was SO good and unique.

First, I want to address a few things. I did look at the low star reviews to see what the issue was. Some were valid (critique of cultural foods when you are of that culture) but being upset over it being too loud in there by others or the tables being too small is silly.
And the plates are meant to be shared.

My only issue that I would hope that they consider is a better system with the waitlist. People line up, not aware that someone eventually comes around asking for a name. We were told our group of three would wait about an hour and fifteen or so minutes. It was a beautiful day so it was a non-issue.
However, she said that we were allowed to walk around to kill time. But I can’t help but think that we would not be around when the name was called because I saw many group names called and not be around.

Ok, the food!
On the table: sesame cold noodle with chili crisp, hong kong style french toast, spicy wontons, and braised pork belly rice

🌞 it felt kind of perfect to get the window table, the sun came through to showcase these dishes to look just as good as they tasted! I do see a major difference of how some of these dishes look now vs 8 months ago with a lot of the poorer reviews. Being in the food business around LA can be tough, so it seemed that Liu’s takes criticism with grace and shift whatever necessary, I’m happy for the cafe :^)

The additional creamery next door was incredible!! The ginger pear sorbet calls my name.

Dang, this place is IT. Still dreaming of the scallion sweet cheese croissant. Chiayi chicken rice is the kind of dish you wish was on hand anytime you’re feeling under the weather — like Chinese soul food. Already can’t wait to come back here.
