The portions were unexpectedly small, but they were very tasty. The lemonades were good; a tad tart but I like that. The guacamole was delicious, but we wished there was more. However, overall, the food here was very good. The service was a little slow, but nice. Thank you!

Mexican restaurant recommended by the Michelin guide.
Fancy menu. Prices are above average.
We didn’t like some flavors .
Some dishes were so spicy that there was no flavor at all.
The tacos were frankly bad.
There was one waiter and one bartender for the whole place. They tried of course, but their efforts were not enough. The ordered dishes and drinks waited endlessly while sitting on very uncomfortable hard chairs. Spoiled evening .

At the start everything was going great. The appetizer Xikil pa'ak was one of the best dishes of my ten day trip through Yucatan, the cocktail was interesting. But then, things started to go wrong. A live band started to play, and they were good, but they were playing so loud that we weren't able to talk during the whole dinner. The waitress stopped paying attention to us, or simply forgot to bring us our drinks. Finally, my entrée came, the shrimp red rice, and two of the six shrimps were uncooked. I told them right aways, so they took my dish and took a long time to bring them back. Everyone at my table had already finished their meal once I was able to eat mine. By this time, the drinks I had ordered hadn't arrived, but they eventually remembered and so they brought me two beers instead of one, the extra one on the house (so kind...). My dish was not that great, it lacked depth. This was unfortunate, because the rest of the dishes were actually quite great. My favorite was probably a dish of the week they had that was a tetela with beans and chicharrón. The lamb birria was also great.

The wait time to be seated varied depending on the color of your skin so watch out for that. I observed this behavior by the proprietor on several occasions throughout the night. However once seated the wait staff were generally very nice. The food was fantastic although the chile ancho was a bit too spicey for me. The grilled cauliflower with its sauce was terrific and the cheesecake was absolutely delicious. The drinks were very good as well. This could have been an amazing experience except for the behavior of the proprietor/host ; which was very clear. He would take several minutes to ask what poc at the door wanted ( he basically ran to others) then  tell them
to wait for 5 minutes while he cleared up a table when their were other open tables which it turned out were free for quite some time anyway. The five minutes ended up being 20 for most where it seemed the hope was they would just leave.

I have had extremely excellent cochinita pibil here on several occasions. Last time I went it was a bit less good? But maybe the deal was that they raised the bar crazy high on the last couple of visits and natural variation meant it couldn’t be achieved every time. Also last time I went I tried a grilled Caesar salad with black garlic which was interesting and very good. Anyway, this remains one of my favorite places in Playa del Carmen (I don’t *think* you can go too wrong here, although I’m keeping my eye on other reviews.)
