Such a shame that this previously fabulous place has gone completely downhill. We come to Porthtowan regularly and have been eating at The Unicorn for a few years which has always been very good. We booked today for New Years Day and it was the worst experience I’ve ever had. As most people in there today had the same experience, waited hours for food. We ordered our food to be told about twenty minutes later one of the items was not available, the pork belly. We waited nearly 45 minutes for our drinks. Our starters came and were nice. We were then told that something else we ordered wasn’t available, sausage and mash. This was over an hour after ordering. We asked to speak to a manager who didn’t come to speak to us for another hour. Having let her poor staff, who were in tears deal with the countless disgruntled and let down customers. People were coming in, seeing the chaos and leaving!

We were given our food for free to be fair and offered a voucher for a future visit. Won’t be going back. However as I tried to explain to the manager it wasn’t about money or free food. I was deeply upset for her poor staff and the standard was terrible. She did not take feedback well which was disappointing and telling when I asked if she had recently taken over. We hadn’t been for a while. She took over in June. We kind of guessed this as it was a stark difference to previous visits. Such a shame as it has always been a go to for us when in Porthtowan. Having two places that serve food and drinks, Unicorn and Blue Bar it’s a competitive market. We always frequent both but will be sticking with The Blue Bar from now own. Felt very upset for the poor staff and we did tip them as they really worked hard.

Just like to say.
I spent Christmas with my kids and dog in Porthtowan.
Katie and her team could not of made us more welcome at the Unicorn 🦄
The atmosphere, the staff, the location, the food.
Everything about the place was amazing we had such a wonderful time, the locals made us feel so welcome.
So much I returned for new year on my own, bearing in mind it was a four hour drive.
New year was also amazing I ate again on New Year’s Day after a lovely walk.
The staff again were amazing.
Thank you guys and keep up the good work.

Absolutely delicious food, the decor was beautiful, great pricing and variety. I would recommend the Veggie Thai curry! Staff are friendly and accommodating.
Very Dog friendly which was perfect for us. Based right next to the beach and a small play park for children, also a huge bonus. Would recommend, great little hidden gem. Thanks for a great last evening meal in Cornwall.

Awful experience that ruined our day. We arrived for a family lunch on New Years Day and were a mixture of adults and children. It took a while to order and then half an hour after we had, we were told that some of the food wasn’t available. We waited and waited for over 2 hours before the first plates of food arrived. 30 mins later the last 3 people were still waiting for their meals. I saw the manager chatting to a different table and asked if I could also speak with her, she was immediately rude to me putting her hand up and telling me to wait! I pointed out I had already waited 2 and a half hours! It turned out that she was responsible for the food and hadn’t even put my food together- but had in fact been talking to the other table. She eventually appeared with a burger wrapped in tin foil for me so I could take it away, but without an apology or any acknowledgment.
The food itself was burnt and the children’s meal came without any vegetables (even though the menu claimed it would). My 2 year old waited 2 hours for a burnt sausage and by the time I got her home she was absolutely ravenous.
The manager continued to be rude and unapologetic to my sister.
Then other staff stared to get sent out to apologise presumably under the instruction of the manager- which was shameful as the staff had all done their best. The young waitress was in tears and it was quite upsetting all round.
I will not be returning or recommending to anyone.

The 3 stars are for the service.  Food was very sad.  I understand that Boxing day can be a challenge, but to be out of almost everything I ordered, including Jameson?  I ordered mussels, but shortly after was told they were not available.   Switched to salt and pepper squid...some ok, some inedible, mushy, and a bit fishy.  Then ordered Cornish Hake with chowder, 10 minutes later, told that ham is incorporated into chowder, I can't eat it (fish only).
Changed to Hake on mash with greens.  OK, quite bland, but good portion.
I felt awful for the waiter, who tried his best.  Not great food, sorry.
