Amidst the winding cobblestone streets of Lisbon lies a treasure that beckons both locals and travelers alike: Manteigaria. This charming bakery, nestled at Rua do Loreto 2, is a bastion of traditional Portuguese culinary artistry, embodying the country's rich heritage with every delectable bite.
As you step inside, the warm aroma of baked goods envelops you, inviting you into a world where time seems to slow down. The star of the show here is the iconic pastel de nata—an irresistible custard tart that boasts a perfectly crisp pastry shell filled with luxuriously creamy custard. Each tart is lovingly crafted, with the chefs skillfully baking them to golden perfection in the blazing ovens that are the heart of Manteigaria.
But the allure doesn’t end there; the atmosphere is suffused with a cozy charm that captivates the soul. Lively conversations, the soft sound of coffee being poured, and the clinking of plates create a symphony of delightful experiences. Whether you choose to savor your treat at the quaint indoor seating or perched at the window overlooking the bustling street, each moment is a delicious escape.
This bakery is not just a stop for food; it’s a storytelling space where the past meets the present. Just a stroll away are the historic sights of the Alfama neighborhood and the vibrant nightlife of Bairro Alto, allowing guests to indulge their curiosity further.
Manteigaria is where Lisbon’s essence is infused into every pastry, making it an essential stop on any gastronomic journey through the capital of Portugal. So, prepare to indulge in a sweet slice of Lisbon’s tradition—not to be missed!

Manteigaria was recommended to us by a local as being the better contender for the traditional pastry Pasteis de Nata than the touristy spot Pasteis de Belem (the creator of the Pasteis de Nata). We tried both, but completely agree that Manteigaria is better, both in terms of flavor and freshness … and the lack of a huge line outside is another plus.
