Assistens Cemetery is a historical place with prominent Danish figures. A bit creepy strolling the grounds.

Beautifully serene, well-kept cemetery. Large enough to serve more as a park and green get-away in the middle of the city. Final resting spot for Hans Christian Andersen, filmmaker Carl Dreyer, American jazz great Ben Webster, and philosopher Soren Kierkegaard, among many others. Lovely to spend an afternoon strolling through the greenery and shade, enjoying the quiet.

Very peaceful and beautiful. Everyone enjoying the place family on picnics some people enjoying the Sun some are reading or just jogging… i enjoyed it so much I spent an hour there and it was barely enough it’s so nice! To be honest I never thought a cemetery can feel this peaceful and alive! Definitely a great experience I recommend going there!

It’s a bit weird to make a review of a graveyard. The customers certainly can’t complain. But “Assistens Kirkegården” is much more than a cemetery it’s also a park full of life and a monument to several of Denmarks most prominent citizens. The cemetery was build around 1760 after a lot people had died from an epidemic and there was a lack of space for the dead inside the old city Walls. So this graveyard “assisted” in the burials and hence its name.
Hans Christian Andersen is by far the most famous person buried here. Niels Bohr, the father of quantum mechanics and Søren Kierkegaard who is considered the greatest existentialist author both lies here as well. When the weather is nice you find people having picnic here which might sound a little bizarre but it seems quite natural actually once you are there.
