The atmosphere is great, it's a very global place. For Japanese people looking to make foreign friends and for foreigners looking to make Japanese friends, it's the best entertainment spot in Kyoto.

I'd just had a tour of the Gion district late one afternoon and just happened to be passing by and I thought I'd stop in for a drink. I think there was one other customer. But the staff were friendly and I had two drinks whilst watching the world go by, which is all I really wanted to do. They were playing some pretty chilled cover version music which I greatly liked, helped tie my visit together.

Very strange place.

My friend and I were using the bathroom to do our lipliner. When we were interrupt by an aggressive banging and the door swung open. 2 patrons and a 1 worker look in at us, it seems they thought we were up to no good? The ordeal was led by the girl accusing us of smoking it would appear? ( not entirely sure what she was suggesting) We stared back in confusion and also a little frustrated?

The worker just stood by watching.

Not sure what to make of the situation. The 2 then got awkward and started apologising but also smirking and laughing at us?

Then left us alone…

Very invasive procedure as either one of us could have been using the bathroom and exposed to an entire night club

This is a honest review here, where I used to go there every Friday, but Zaza used be really good 3-4years ago. Now the staff’s are rude, there are new rules where you are force to buy a drink as soon as you enter. Where I just wanted to speak to a friend upstairs as his phone was turned off, and I told them that I will leave soon as I spoke to him, but no!!! The staff pulled me back from the arm, where it’s bruised now. I can show the photo which I took just in case to report.  I don’t know what happened, but I guess it is not like the old times. Totally changed, I would rather find and go to a different pub. This is just sad as it used to be one of the best pubs in Kyoto. Just sad

The service and pricing are good however like all other Kyoto spots that arent cool and local exclusive-its a buncha people you may have flown in with. Its not terrible but its just bland and no local flavor
